chaz-jpeg
Listen: She Dont Want To See Us Together

ChazO was born, Chaz Dortch, in January, 1987 in Harlem, New York, into a large family of seven.  By the fourth grade, ChazO discovered he possessed an interest in music, while listening to the records his mother played, that she referred to as the “golden oldies”.

With the encouragement of his family, he was led to an audition for the Boys Choir of Harlem.  As he grew older and grew more passionate for his vocals, he was able to utilize the Boys Choir to gain respect for his talents.  Those achievements include touring with Boys Choir to many locations including the Apollo Theatre and Puerto Rico.  This was the stepping stone into his music career.

By the age of 14, ChazO started writing his own lyrics and gaining a deeper meaning to become significant in the industry.  Leaving behind the Boys Choir, he discovered new means to express his ability in songwriting and performance.  This discovery brought him much success by winning talent shows in New York City competing with other rising stars.  He has had many great musical influences such as Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson.

ChazO collaborated with “Metta”, The More Then Music Records’ artist on the single “We can do Something”On April 7th,2009 Chazo was selected the winner of the R&B competition at the Faces In The Crowd industry showcase .This welcomed a larger fan base making him a local rising New York star.

Now 22, ChazO’s ability to utilize lyrics with his own distinct style has prepared him to enter the next level, becoming the most exceptional singer and songwriter of his generation.

Toussaint - Feb 2009 - R&B

touss
Listen: Spacesuits-Starships
Toussaint

As a young man growing up in Inglewood,CA hoop dreams were a given. Being naturally gifted with height and athleticism I was convinced that these dreams were attainable. At the same time I took an unlikely interest in literal and oral expression. This interest led to freewritting, debating, theater, and singing. Early disappointment in both areas discouraged me from pursuing either of them further.

I remember feeling at that time responsibility to own and develop my gifts but this fear of failure was too great, with a void left by shrunken dreams the streets became more and more appealing. Alcohol, Tabacco & Marijuana replaced sports, academics and interest towards anything expressive. I found myself in the company of a much more colorful crowd exposed to Gangsters, Pimps, Homelessness, Hopelessness, Hard Core Drugs, Prostitutes & Self Destruction. Initiation to this new crowd was the sacrifice of my youth but somehow I took away a heightened sense of reality and still managed to salvage “Myself”. Throughout this transformation music remained a constant in my life. Although other genres had their place, Rap was defiant and unapologetic at nature while being Rhythmic, Cultural, Literal, Poetic, and Expressive. It’s freeness and structure rendered it not only paradoxical but complex. I was drawn to it.

At the same time I was heavily influenced by the genius of a young rapper named Tupac Shakur. The fearlessness of his controversial and uplifting lyrics inspired me to tap back into my own genius and pull out something similar. I began indulging in freestyle. I knew this would set me apart from many other rap artists. I practiced and got better and better with this newely homed skill and combined it with my prior itch in poetry. With that a perfect recipe for songwriting was created. I began writing rap songs and learning about the logistics of lyrical formatting, from counting bars to arranging full songs. From there I started writing and recording vocals for my own and others hooks. I then began to experience exponential growth lyrically and vocally.

Curiousity of a new challenge coupled with the budding singing career of my older brother lead me to write and record my first R&B song “Getaway”. This accomplishment sparked a new found belief in myself. My writing and arranging began to drift exclusively to songwriting. I knew this was no accident. My destiny was unfolding before me and it had inextricable connection to singing and songwriting.

Unexpected changes in life lead me to VA. There I went on a hiatus from all things musically, it gave way to personal progression and advances in my life. There I got my first car, first job, and was basically my first time being on my own. After a year a new hunger for my exclusive dream put me on the road back to California in my new Cadillac. Shortly after reaching home, an explosion of new songs, new ideas and new direction came about. But not too long after that the reality of life began to take hold. The music thing had not taken off the way I expected and funds were little to none.

Ironically, the very car I thought would drive me to my dreams was the only thing that kept me warm some nights. I thought to myself “This can’t be life, there’s gotta be more”. I got back on the road and ended up in ATL,GA. Things immediately got better, I started working , got an Apartment, and gained new connections in the music industry. Everyone believed in me and my music which caused “Me” to do the same.

I felt like I was where I belonged with the help and support of Family and Friends and a Producer who shared the same interest. From there I became the Artist I am today.
On my Quest for the truth and fulfillment, I have come to realize my destiny.
“ I am on a mission to Replinish the World with Beautiful Music”.

Flood- Dec 2008 - Hip-Hop

Listen: Cocaine
Flood

I was born and raised in Staten Island,New York in a hood known as New Brighton aka Now Born. I grew up listening to Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, and Slick Rick. I was into boxing allot and when I went on tournaments to fight, I would put my cd in my player and zone out. At that time my brother was making music; so that’s what I would listen to. What started me writing my own music was in junior high school,at lunch time everybody from every hood would gather around the lunch table and start free styling. After a few times of listening to everyone I said to myself “Shit I can do that.” and I did. After the first time I spit and got the responds that I did, I just kept on writing everyday so I would have something new for everyone to hear. When I got to high school I met up with some kids that were just as interested in music as I was. We got together and formed a group called ” Forever United”. The group began writing together everyday we also had to hustle so we could get enough money for studio time. The music that we were making was so good that it created a buzz in the hood. We started to meet up to practice because we started to do shows. After we would preform people would give us beats just so they could say that they had a track from Forever United. As the group got older we started to have different ideas on what type of music we should be doing. I had met this white kid by the name of “DL” he would dj at allot of house and techno clubs along with hip hop clubs. DL mixed all the sounds in one and said Flood ” I got this sound that your group would sound crazy on.” I let them hear it but no one wanted to fuck with it. I loved the sound so I ran with it. The sound is so different everyone ask me what kind of music is this? Is it hip hop, pop or what? I would tell them it’s neither, the sound that you are hearing is my own and it is called “Get it Music”

Derty Den- Oct 2008 - Hip-Hop

Listen: Poppin
Derty Den

From a small town infested with drugs, alcohol and rampant violence we find the south’s newest star. Towering at an enormous 6′3 and weighing slightly over 300lbs, Derty Den, a.k.a Big Gates is a force of nature to be reckoned with. Den’s word play, rich in metaphors and prophetic insight, endears all who hear him — to him. As a true student of the game Den prides himself on being an official Master of Ceremonies [MC]. Taking the weight of such a title to heart, Den aims to create a sound that amplifies the good in the hood as opposed to showcasing negatives. “I want to show that the south is more than just screaming, yelling and stereotypes.”

If anyone is capable of finding the right balance of party and meaning in this lukewarm musical climate, without a doubt - Derty Den is our man. His energy, swagger and flow demands a response from his listeners. His true life depictions and story telling style of rap has earned him Best Southern Artist credentials at the Underground Music Awards, as well as, continuous coverage in major music publications such as The Source, Ozone and the largest Hip Hop magazine in France - Rap U.S.

Den’s latest single “Poppin” is gaining momentum on the southern home-front. Coupled with the instant smash “Heatwave”, it was all Don Cannon (Apphiliates) needed to hear before agreeing to host his most recent mixtape. “To have a DJ as strong as Cannon support me is tremendous to say the least,” Den humbly asserts.

Nyce Billy - Sept 2008 - Hip-Hop

Listen: Feels So Good
www.myspace.com/NyceBilly

Edward Kwaku Sekyere (born July, 14 1988) better known as Nyce Billy, is an American rapper / singer-songwriter born and raised in the Bronx, NY. He is best known for his debut single “You Madd,” featuring well-known and respected fellow NY rapper Jae Millz. Nyce Billy was discovered by Felippe “YO!” Santos and signed to YO’s independent label “Everything to Gain” (ETG). A recent (September 16, 2008) live performance of his up-coming album’s debut single “Feel So Good” landed Nyce Billy the1st place ranking at the “Faces in the Crowd” NYC industry showcase hosted by Saigon (known for appearances on HBO’s hit series Entourage). Under ETG, Nyce Billy plans to showcase his wide range of talent from Rap to R&B. His highly anticipated debut album entitled “A Bronx Tale” will be coming out in early 2009.

Early years

Nyce Billy was born in Lincoln Hospital located in the Bronx to Edmund Sekyere and Juliet Gyesie. He attended Immaculate Conception (k-8) and Cardinal Hayes (9-12). Nyce Billy’s interests include basketball, football, and most notably, music. He played basketball for Cardinal Hayes while he was a student there, and attended Belle piano classes and The Dance School of Harlem Theater.

Growing up, Nyce Billy listened to Ghanaian music, a lot of rap, and R&B. He considers LL Cool J and Mase to be his main influences because he enjoyed their entire aura, including their memorable performances, style of music, and the amount of respect and love that they received from their fans. In the fourth grade, Nyce Billy was part of a talent show and won 1st place for dancing. At age 15, he realized that he had a true passion for music and decided that he wanted to become a rap artist. To pursue this dream, at the age of 16, Nyce Billy and his friends started a rap group called “O D Camp,” which stood for “Over Due…” During this time, Nyce Billy was known as “Young Nyce.” The group performed at several talent shows, including one at Playland in Rye, NY which had an excellent turn out.

However, the group split up after two years as everyone decided to amicably go their separate ways. This split did not deter Nyce Billy. He had made a true commitment to his music and intended to keep it. Starting from that point onward, Young Nyce became known as “Nyce Billy.” With this new image, he got to work and completed several songs on his own, eventually leading him to be discovered by Felippe Santos (also known as YO!) in February 2008. Nyce Billy plans on releasing his debut album “A Bronx Tale” in early 2009.

A talented artiste, whose government name is Nelson Serieux, Cherry L‘s music lies firmly in the camp of dancehall reggae. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, he uses dancehall as a base for his musical explorations instead of as a straitjacket; for Cherry L each song must be true to itself and not just the conventions of a genre.Cherry L has particularly demonstrated a penchant for incorporating classic roots reggae into his music providing thus creating a more organic sound than other performers who rather rely on purely digital ‘riddims’.

Though grounded in a reggae aesthetic, Cherry L’s work channels older music traditions; incorporating overtones of Soul and subtle sprinklings of St. Lucian folk music. (He is a former quadrille dancer.) This channelling is a result of Cherry L’s eclectic musical tastes; his main influences include Bob Marley, Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer, Sam Cooke and the Beatles as the musicians who impact his work the most

Cherry L grew up in the village of Mon Repos in the South of St. Lucia.  He showed an interest in music early, mainly due to the influence of his parents; His mother taught music and his father was an avid music listener. It was here that his musical career began by initially doing covers at school before eventually starting to write his own material at the age of sixteen. Cherry L is involved in the creation of his music from conception to final edit and displays his musical prowess by co-producing many of his tracks, along with his producer, and some say translator, Sherwinn ‘Dupes’ Brice. Cherry L’s growing catalogue of unreleased songs is a testament to his great work ethic.

In addition to his strong emphasis on producing high quality studio recordings, Cherry L is noted for his strong live performances which have endeared him to fans at every venue he performs, from acoustic sets in small cozy clubs to large outdoor concerts, including the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival. Holliewood has an assignment: his mission is to bring quality back to the music industry. Right now, the music industry has collapsed in its effort to keep up with the so-called “Hip-Hop Generation.” What happened to the Rap music that has a fresh sound, not oversaturated and doesn’t degrade women? Why is there so much profanity? Who can the industry count on to maintain a style that is unparallel. His name is Holliewood and he is from Brooklyn, New York.

Refusing to be put in a box, Holliewood is unafraid to be different. He’s known for meshing the new school of Hip Hop with the old school. Taking notes from some of the most influential people in music, from his neighbors Jay-Z and the Notorious B.I.G, to the creative forces we call Outkast, just to name a few. One listen to his music and you will notice a wide array of musical genres: a spectrum from rock, to pop, to R&B, and of course Hip-Hop. From the moment you press “Play,” his distinct baritone grabs you, forcing anticipation of what’s to come, and you can be sure that one song never sounds the same as the last.

On tracks like the infectious “Cook It Up” Holliewood’s melodic swag slurs over the sleek “Bananna Bros” produced track as he uses the metaphor of cooking to describe a sexy night out with that special lady. On “Jukebox” Holliewood allows you to join him as he explores the idea that love can be like a Jukebox. He made sure not to forget where he’s from with tracks like “Brooklyn Keeps on Takin’ It” and“No Sleep til Brooklyn (2008)”. Holliewood often referred to as H.Wood continues to manage his ability to be different with tracks like the eighties inspired “Flyest Girl” as he takes you out in NYC and explores the club determined to find the flyest girl.

Some key facts about Holliewood:

1) Holliewood has won many talent showcases in addition to his recent win at the August 2008 “Faces In the Crowd” music showcase.

2) He has a unique psyche that allows him to stand apart from any other artist.

In the end, it is time for the unique and determined Holliewood to get the maximum exposure he deserves. As you can see, he has it all so let’s not waste anymore time thinking about who will be the next big hit, you already have your star and his name is Holliewood!

brian_acosta- July 2008 - Hip-Hop

brian_acostabrian_acosta

brian_acosta is a lyrical artisan whose precise and interlocked syllables float across a wave of transfixing beats. Edgy, energized and empowered, his musical union interjects literacy to lyrics as it connects heart to soul. “Born Ready” the title of one of his spoken word pieces, is the perfect metaphor for his life, his art and his destiny.

He characterizes his work as “more semantic”. I’m trying to be diverse, not to have 80 songs about my car or 300 songs about the chain around my neck. I don’t want to be that guy who sticks to that niche.” What he prefers to pinpoint is the drama of human relationships. “As a listener hearing about somebody else’s thing, you can’t commit to it 100%. I want to make music that has situations in it that are realistic.”

As a kid growing up in the monochromatic suburban sprawl of New Jersey, brian_acosta epitomized a vivid cultural mix: his dad is from India and his mom is from the Philippines. “I witnessed the difference right there between myself and other people,” he recalls. “It made me more culturally out there.” Although his lack of interest in math and science defied stereotypes, his affinity for music and performance was realized through choir and classic Broadway musicals. Ska and punk from white skater culture influenced his initial popular musical tastes, but when his Latino friends turned him on the classic hip-hop of DMX, Eminem, Jay-Z and Biggie Smalls, these themes resonated even more deeply. “I focused on what they were saying and the rebel part of me came out. I ate it all up.” To amuse himself during snooze inducing classes, he began writing raps with a classmate. “Kids started catching on to what we were doing. I’d be in a big circle, with me rapping and poking fun at people, which got me in trouble. Then I started writing down thoughts and feelings.”

A voracious reader, Brian consumes words on a broad spectrum of subjects: from horror to Christian fiction to comedy. He especially appreciates books that analyze the history of hip-hop. “I research the originators to make my music more original, not recycled.” As a songwriter, he creates from the impetus of a beat, and the vibe generally determines the subject matter of his lyrics. Not given to extensive rewrites, he creates in the moment with immediacy and inspiration, often completing a lyric within hours. He shares these words in a variety of venues, talent showcases and open mics around New York and New Jersey.

The emergence of brian_acosta represents a new paradigm in the shifting cultural landscape that is 21st Century America. Equal parts modern kid absorbed in video games and a savvy poetic creator, his captivating rhymes orbit a culture both alienating and embracing.
